Fire Brigade Visit
We had the Hokitika Volunteer Fire Brigade visit our class to talk to us about what to do and how to keep safe in a fire. We learnt what the difference between a toy and a tool is. We know not to take any of our toys with us in a fire and we leave everything behind. We need to get low and get out.
Town Library Visit
On Thursday Rūma Weka went to the town library in Hokitika. We went there to get the book Who’s Home is This read to us and to make penguins. We made penguins because they are endangered, so we could learn about them and because our book told us about them. We did a quiz about penguins. We learnt that penguins eat fish and they can swim down 15 metres. They only need to sleep for 4 minutes. Penguins are amazing because they have built-in goggles. When they get embarrassed their feet turn pink!

It Snowed in Hokitika
A couple of weeks ago it snowed in Hokitika. This was very exciting for us as it doesn't usually happen because we live very close to the sea. All of Weka thought the snow was very exciting, so we wrote about it. Read our snow stories. This was also the 1st time we published our own writing. We did really well.

Westland District Library Visit
Westland District Library Visit
To celebrate the annual NZ Book Awards, Weka are planning a trip to the Westland District Library. We are going next Thursday 22nd August leaving school at 10.10am and returning to school at approximately 12.30 - 1.00pm.
We require help with transport to get to the library and supervision at the library.
If you are able to help on the day please let us know on the form provided. If you are unable to help please also return the form signed so that we know you have seen this and are aware of our intentions.
After our visit to the library we plan to walk to the supermarket to find out about how the supermarket sources their supply of eggs and to check whether the supermarket does have heaps of hens laying all those eggs! This is because our class inquiry is focussed on our school ‘chook house’. We plan to walk from the library to the supermarket if it is fine and return to our vehicles at the library before returning to school.
You will need: a vehicle that is registered and warranted, and a full driver’s licence.
Please make sure your licence, WoF, and registration details are current and have been sighted by Ann at the office prior to Thursday.
All Children will need: a car seat (we do not have these available at school) at school if their parent is not attending. If they do not bring an approved car seat they will be unable to attend our visit.
Can you please ensure you have returned this slip by Monday 19th August.
Many thanks,
Sue and Latham

100 Days at School Party!
100 Days at School Party!
We have been counting 100 days at school! Wow, can you believe that we are already at 99 days and on Tuesday 30th July we will celebrate our 100 days at school. We are holding it on Tuesday (a couple of days later) as this is a day that we will both be at school.
We are now counting on you to support your child to bring 100 of something to share with our class. Some examples are as follows: 100 rice bubbles, 100 pebbles, or 100 leaves. 100 of anything would be great, and it should be an easy and fun task for you and your ākonga.
We also ask that you bring a healthy food option to share on Tuesday 30th July. An extra challenge is to see if you can cut it up into 100 portions!
Yours in counting,
Sue Scott and Latham Martin

Interchange Notice
We are looking for keen parents to run an interchange activity each Friday 11-12 during this term. This is an opportunity for you to share a skill or talent with our students and we can be flexible in terms of the age and amount of students you could work with.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Mihi
Kia ora koutou,
This term we are going to be learning and introducing ourselves using our mihi. A mihi establishes links with others and is used to introduce ourselves by sharing our whakapapa (genealogy, ancestral ties) and other relevant information. To know one’s whakapapa is to know one’s identity.
A mihi includes the specific geographical features associated with the area that you identify with. The mountain and river may be connected to where your child was born, where they live or a mountain or river that has special significance to them.
Weka will be learning to say their mihi in class and we will also be creating a visual artwork of our school mihi. The learning of our mihi will be in small, achievable steps.
There may be parts of the mihi that are not relevant for you to fill in, that’s ok, you can just leave these blank. Can you please fill in the relevant parts and return to school by this Friday 26th July.
If you have any questions please come and see us.
Many thanks,
Sue and Latham

Term 2 Learning Goals - Rangatiratanga
Over the term, Weka have written and worked on their own learning goals related to Rangatiratanga - Leadership over their own self and their learning. You will find your child's learning goal in the slide presentation below. If you can please support them towards achieving their goal over the holidays and send evidence of them achieving it, by way of a photo to their teachers, that would be much appreciated.

Wig Wednesday
On Wednesday it was Wig Wednesday. We wore our wigs to raise money for children with cancer. Some of us knew a boy in Hokitika who has cancer and we thought the money would help others to get better. This is a photo students in our school and our Teachers wearing our wigs.
This is our class 'Weka' with our wigs. Some of us haven't got wigs on so we designed some wigs would like to wear.

We wrote stories about wig Wednesday. We like writing and we hope you like reading our work.

Help to keep those 'Winter bugs' away
On Friday we had a visit from Fiona - the Public Health Nurse and her assistant Harriet, a Nursing Student. We really enjoyed them coming into Weka and talking to us about ways we can help to keep the Winter Bugs away from making us sick.
Fiona and Harriet showed us how easy it was to spread germs. Fiona sneezed and as she did threw some polystrene loose fill where all the germs may have landed as she sneezed. They sure landed a long way away and some landed on our feet and some on our bodies. We learnt how to cough or sneeze into our elbow in order to trap any germs.
Next we learnt how to blow our nose correctly. We all got a tissue and had a practise.
We used the torch to check out our hands too after we had washed them. Most of our germs on your hands are around our fingernails. Make sure you wash and dry your hands correctly.

Thanks Harriet and Fiona for coming to Weka and sharing all those great things we can do to help keep ourselves well.
Word Writing
This term in Weka we are trying really hard to increase the number of words we are able to write in 10 minutes. At the beginning of the term we created a 'Word Writing' wall and we each have a pencil peg that we use to show the range of words we are able to write.
On a Friday we have 10 minutes to write as many words as we can. Mrs Scott and Mr Martin help us to prompt words we can write. The student in the class who writes the most words receives a trophy to take home for the week and the student in the class who makes the most progress from the previous week also receives a trophy. Some of us love the challenge of this. On 'Our Word Writing ' wall we also have trophies displayed to show who earnt them for the week.

What Wonderful Weka
What an awesome 1st Term we have had with this wonderful bunch of Weka. We have learnt so much and still have so many wonderful learning opportunities to come. Happy holidays Weka. We took this photo for the book we have written - "Smile" said Mrs Scott and Mr Martin. We will be sharing this at assembly next term.
Yummy Watermelon
Mr Martin was very excited about giving us some watermelon for a snack. Some of us really liked it and it was very juicy too.
We love having Mrs Burt
Weka have been so lucky having Mrs Burt in our class. She has been doing lots of great maths with us and has sorted out our maths equipment too. She thinks we're pretty good at counting too!! Thanks for coming to visit and helping us Mrs Burt. We are really looking forward to you coming back.

We are always learning!!!
Learning never stops. Aahil is still thinking about building his knowledge as he eats his lunch. He was excited to find something in his lunch box that was a s shape and in between mouthfuls could tell me a word that starts with this sound. Well done Aahil - I like the way you are always trying to build on your knowledge.

Explorer of the Week
Each week in Weka we have an 'Explorer of the Week'
The 'Explorer of the Week' has the opportunity to share with the class what makes them special and the special things and interests in their lives. They also lead the class in the Welcome each morning, call the roll and complete the daily calendar. At the end of the week the class write an Acrostic Poem about the 'Explorer of the Week' based on the things they have learnt. We all like learning about each other and the skills they are learning when sharing with others. Have a read of our Acrostic Poems from Term 1.
