Fire Brigade Visit

We had the Hokitika Volunteer Fire Brigade visit our class to talk to us about what to do and how to keep safe in a fire. We learnt what the difference between a toy and a tool is. We know not to take any of our toys with us in a fire and we leave everything behind. We need to get low and get out.

Town Library Visit

On Thursday Rūma Weka went to the town library in Hokitika. We went there to get the book Who’s Home is This read to us and to make penguins. We made penguins because they are endangered, so we could learn about them and because our book told us about them. We did a quiz about penguins. We learnt that penguins eat fish and they can swim down 15 metres. They only need to sleep for 4 minutes. Penguins are amazing because they have built-in goggles. When they get embarrassed their feet turn pink!

It Snowed in Hokitika

A couple of weeks ago it snowed in Hokitika. This was very exciting for us as it doesn't usually happen because we live very close to the sea.  All of Weka thought the snow was very exciting, so we wrote about it. Read our snow stories. This was also the 1st time we published our own writing. We did really well.

Westland District Library Visit

Westland District Library Visit To celebrate the annual NZ Book Awards, Weka are planning a trip to the Westland District Library. We are going next Thursday 22nd August leaving school at 10.10am and returning to school at approximately 12.30 - 1.00pm. We require help with transport to get to the library and supervision at the library. If you are able to help on the day please let us know on the form provided. If you are unable to help please also return the form signed so that we know you have seen this and are aware of our intentions. After our visit to the library we plan to walk to the supermarket to find out about how the supermarket sources their supply of eggs and to check whether the supermarket does have heaps of hens laying all those eggs! This is because our class inquiry is focussed on our school ‘chook house’. We plan to walk from the library to the supermarket if it is fine and return to our vehicles at the library before returning to school. You will need: a vehicle that is registered and warranted, and a full driver’s licence. Please make sure your licence, WoF, and registration details are current and have been sighted by Ann at the office prior to Thursday. All Children will need: a car seat (we do not have these available at school) at school if their parent is not attending. If they do not bring an approved car seat they will be unable to attend our visit. Can you please ensure you have returned this slip by Monday 19th August. Many thanks, Sue and Latham

Sid likes Matfiic

Weka has been leading the world in Matific. We love Matific and all of the maths we learn. It has taught us about numbers, counting, and how to solve problems. Sid also loves Matific. He came and helped. We think he would love his own cat iPad so he can use Matific in his own time.
